Please see the CCAS program for Pediatric Anesthesiology 2008, April 3-6 in San Diego.

On March 8, the CCAS held its first Pediatric Anesthesia Conference in conjunction with the Winter SPA Meeting. Over 250 attendees, plus an outstanding program coordinated by Dr. Chandra Ramamoorthy made the meeting a great success.

A number of timely and interesting topics were presented in several formats, including lectures, problem-based learning discussion, workshops, and a  pro-con debate. The meeting opened with an update session on hypoplastic left heart syndrome, with Dr. Susan Nicolson speaking about long term survival and neurologic outcomes, Dr. George Hoffman about near infrared cerebral and somatic oxygen saturation monitoring, and Dr. Dean Andropoulos speaking about newer strategies for neuroprotection.  This was followed by an excellent presentation by Pediatric Cardiologist Norman Silverman, M.D. about anatomical correlations with transesophageal echocardiography, and an outstanding lecture by Pediatric Cardiac Intensivist Karen Booth M.D. about arrhythmia diagnosis and treatment. This session was followed by lectures on management of patients with pulmonary hypertension by Dr. Rob Freisen, and update on lung transplantation by Dr. Sharma Anshuman, and then a case presentation of a patient with severe pulmonary hypertension by Dr. Helen Holtby.

After lunch there was a lively pro-con debate about aprotinin use with Dr. Paul Reynolds taking the pro position, and Dr. Glyn Williams the con position. This was followed by an excellent PBLD on a tetralogy of Fallot patient undergoing cholecystectomy by Drs. Emad Mossad and Suanne Davies, and outstanding workshops on transesophageal echocardiography by Dr. Wanda Miller-Hance,  and pacemakers by pediatric electrophysiologist Dr. Naomi Kertesz.

The conference evaluations from the audience were very positive, and had a number of suggestions for future topic. Because of this response, the SPA Board asked that there be another CCAS Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesia Conference in 2008, again held the day before the Winter Meeting. Dr. Jim DiNardo is the Program Director for this conference.
